There are two aspects to saving a file to a drive. The file index, and the physical location of the file.

When you delete a file, you only are deleting the entry from the file index. The space where the actual data is residing becomes marked as free space, but until you begin writing data to the drive, the current contents go untouched. This is why you can recover data after "deletions".
