Your student should know the letters of the alphabet to begin with....their names and what their sounds are. That is a good starting place.
Teaching the variety of vowel sounds is not an easy task. I would suggest you visit an education-supplies store (we have some here called GW School Supply) and look for books that can help you teach the vowel sounds. There are many paperback versions, with lessons that can be photocopied. I purchased several when I was home-teaching. They are in the neighborhood of $10 each.
The long vowel sound should be easy enough. If the student knows the NAME of the vowel (A, E, I, O, U), and just says the vowel's NAME, that's it.
