Instructions
1
Convert spelling and abbreviation of metric units to their corresponding SI equivalents. For example, 20 meters should be expressed in abbreviated form as "20 m" rather than "20 M."
2
Use the standard abbreviations for all common units. For the kilometer it is "km," for the liter "l" or "L," for the kilogram "kg" and for the gram simply "g." Refer to the table, "Bureau International des Poids et Mesures: SI Base Units," for extended details. (See Resources.)
3
Omit the period for all SI abbreviations unless the unit ends a sentence. For example: He threw the javelin 89 m.
4
Do not use non-standard SI unit terms such as the angstrom, knot or decibel. A complete list of non-standard units is available from the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures.
