In genetics, a vector is a circular DNA fragment that contains a certain gene that was inserted into the vector by molecular methods. A host in this case is a bacteria into which the vector can be inserted (in a process called transformation). Once inside a host, the gene on the vector can be expressed and the protein coded by it can be synthesized with the host's protein synthesis mechanisms.
This method can enable scientists to produce proteins with varied functions.
