At the beginning of the civil war Virginia seceded from the union. However, the decision wasn't accepted by all the delegates to the convention. The western part of Virginia was more supportive of the union and held two conventions called the Wheeling Conventions, one in 1861 and a second in 1863. In the second convention the delegate voted to separate from Virginia and formed the state of West Virginia on June 3, 1863. It was also the only time a state seceded from the southern states.

West Virginia was originally a part from British Virginia colony between 1607 and 1776, and the west part of the state of Virginia from 1776 and 1863. It was separated from the state of Virginia during the civil war(only two states had done this during the civil war, Navada and West Virginia).West Virginia was a key civil war border state, and became a separated state from Virginia after the two Wheeling conventions (the Wheeling conventions were organized especially to decide the future of West Virginia). in those meeting it was decided that West virginia will be seceding from the confederation.
