I don’t think there is any “best answer” here. Anybody who took time to write their experiences has been helpful to me in making a decision.

Not any more, I went to a couple a few years ago and the both made my condition worse, but that's me, I know they have helped a few of my friends.

How did you get better? Time? Medication? Physical therapy?

Chronic pain is difficult to live with. I get by.

My ex mother in-law had two primary care doctors, one here in Texas and the other in Carolina. She went to both of them complaining about a persistent cough that she could not get rid of and both of them prescribed her cough medication. When she went to her Chiropractor, after explaining her symptoms, he took X-Rays of her chest, discovering that she had lung cancer. If she would have seen him first, her cancer may have been diagnosed early enough to have saved her life.

Sure speaks well for the Chiropractor!

My mom went to a chiropractors for a long term back injury. She was that desperate. She ended up in traction for two weeks.....I won't see a chiropractor.....

Yes. I've used chiropractors many times through out my life. They help more than medical doctors do.  Medical doctors do not know what to do with back problems other than dole out pain meds, prescribe PT or do surgery which typically just compounds the problems.

My pain doctor, pain medication, and physical therapy keep me from spending my days in bed.
I am curious because my daughter has signed up for long-term therapy with a chiropractor.

I have had chiropractic treatments which did seem to help various "ailments" but I have not gone to one for several years. I had no ill affects nor had I ever heard anything negative.

I did go about once a week for about 3 months then once a  month for about 3 or 4 years up to about 11 years ago. Not sure if it really helped much,. It was very expensive. My son has been going for about two years now, but when he went to his doctor about a month ago with the same back problems, he sent him to see a physio on the national health, and this has made him alot better, and didn't cost him a penny.

I go to a chiropractor if some joint has slipped out and I can’t get it back in on my own. But I can generally work neck & back problems out with stretching exercises. I have always cracked my knuckles and everything else that would crack when stressed. Then I started to find that my muscles were also cracking loose when I stressed them so I looked it up to see why that was happening and found that low magnesium will make mussels and joints stick and crack. So I have been taking supplements for a while and find that there are many joints and mussels that no longer crack under stress.

Thanks. My daughter and I both have problems. I’ve never heard about low magnesium being a problem but I’ll do more checking.

good info,Robert.Another feature along those lines is that most of us are low on Vit. D.

Some of the medical doctors are not exactly very confidence inspiring.  I would give a chiropractor a chance to look at that, especially in light of the fact that the back is their area of expertise.

    Amen to that Shootah!

I saw a chiropractor for the first year after my injury.  He was helpful in so many ways!  Then I had surgery and he didn't want to manipulate my spine- which was a good thing because I didn't fuse well.

doo, did you have to go ahead with surgery or were there other options? I'm just asking because I know two people who had back surgery...one had super results...the other...in a wheelchair for life. :(
    doolittle

They didn't make any promises it would work but I had done the whole 9 yard- chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, reiki, pain medication, physical therapy...everything except Bungee jumping. It was a 50/50 shot that I was willing to take. It didn't really help and the rest of my neck has serious probs now, I have mid-back and lower back probs (thank my spouse for those) and have developed arthritis in my hips and new onset scoliosis- but most, if not all, of this would have occured without surgery.

That all sounds very, very awful. Do any of those alternatives help with the pain now...massage? reikki? Have you tried therapeutic touch? Poor doo..it must be exhausting to be in pain all the time. :( I feel so very fortunate!
    doolittle

I have tried herapeutic touch with some success...and massages help, especially by friends, by making me feeled cared for if nothing else. It is exhausting especially when I don't sleep well which is pretty often.

I read on Dr. Mercolas Website, that Depression and back problems go hand in hand., since there is a body-mind connection.
I would be afraid to have an operation on my back. My Ex-husband was operated on his back and came out even worse.
I an truly sorry Doo, that you have to go through this.
    doolittle

Thanks Ann and you are correct about pain and depression...it takes a long time to get used to the pain and the losses one sustains (work, athletics, some hobbies, etc)

I used to go to a Dr. who pushed meds.  I didn't see any sense in continuing this, since the side effects were problematic.  I went to a chiropractor, and have been using his services regularly for over 13 yrs.  He has solved my lower back problem, with my scoliosis the problem is in my upper back.  He works on me one to two times per month, and I am very functional.  No medications, just adjustments.  Works for me, may not for all!

Yes...way too much pill pushing without any suggestion to try alternative medicine. It's a competition I guess.

H - - - -, Yes, I would !  and I did.....especailly back in 1987 and  1988. I had the worst back pain from taking care of heavy people by myself, in a private duty situation when I was an LPN.  Then, I went to a chiropractor 3 X  a week ! ........for a year and a half. The pain finally eased up.I causiously asked him if I was " cured "  and he said, " Cured, No, but stablized."    And he said if you have a back problem when you're over 30, you'll always have a back problem.

    sunnyB

That's true, once you have it you always have it, some days you feel nothing, and then suddenly one wrong move and it starts again. Just have to learne to live with it really.

When I first found out I had “chronic pain” I said, “How do I live like this?” The doctor said ... “change your life” And I did. Nothing is the same. And it’s not all good. : (

    itsmee,

First and foremost I too suffer back pain and often to were it interupts what I am doing. I had a minor in Anthropology with two specific interest ethnology and physical anthro or archeology. I enjoyed it iimensely but couldn't see a return on my investment so, I remained a minor to satiate my sanity. One would have to require a masters & get published = deminishing return.

Back to the question. Yes, iI have in fact visited chiropractor but the relief was temporal and short lived. The insurance I had did not cover this type of care and it was out of pocket expense. Prior to going I identified the few issues I had in order to present them in a prioritized manner. Needless to say we started with xrays and went from there. We quickly discussed my treatment and was led to the back where multple tables were staged my initial treatment was just an adjustment. Perhaps, there was somewhat of miniscule relief but far from miraculous. It was explained that my body was out of balance for so long a series of adjustments might be in order. I thought to myself the only adjustment might only be my wallet.

I returned and explained my concerns and he introduced me to something new I never experience before. Electrotherapy were he placed to wired cloth adhesvie pads horizontally each across the small of my back. Slowly he increased the micro voltage and entered a program into the machine. He further explained that the program alternatingly pulsed micro electricity across my back from pad to pad. Inquired if I was okay and replied, "Yes" he left stating he would soon return. A young female attentant returned in about 10 minutes and asked if I was okay? I replied,"Yes" she left When the Doc returned I was asleep. He unplugged the electric adhesive pads and assisted me in getting up. I was amazed. There wasn't any grabbing pain or electrical nerve shock pulsing down my left leg. No more drugs I walked to my vehicle and didn't have to sideways mount or slither in my vehicle.

I went straight to work where I stood on the assembly line finished my 10 hr shift with a smile on my face but the following day. the back issues returned.

I guess, what I am saying is it worked for me giving me relief on my second visit but 1st electrotherapy treatment. So, one might call ahead prior to making an chiropractic appointment asking if does electrotherapy and costs and try it if it works great. If not sorry.

If it works due to economy of scale you can purchase a machine called Tens off the internet costs vary according to their programs self administer as needed accordinglly and save repeated trips to chiropractor

The devices vary in size but seemingly most are about the size of the old sony walkman cassette player if you follow. They are powered by battery some by nine volt but batteries become expensive and if you can afford it a 110 vlt adapter might be cheaaper in the long run. The battery device increases your mobility. It has a belt clip which permitts you to go room to room, yard ,car and so on.

I make no claim or have not any vested interest other just trying to help. I make not any money off these devices by seemingly endorsing them. The only benefit it bringsis trying to help someone get a little relief from back pain. I am told it helps diabetic neuroapthy forgive spelling and grammer. The thrill of helping is more important than hiding my stupidity.

    Good Luck,

    itsmee

I got some good information here. Thanks. I haven’t made any decisions about the chiropractor yet. We’ll see.
Somebody gave me a tens unit. I was in a lot of pain so I turned in on really high and left it going for a l--o--n--g time. It wasn’t wise. Now I’m afraid of them.
I hate my back pain. It’s unpredictible. I never know when I’m going to be able to go out to dinner or shop or .... whatever.
    Thanks for the information.

The 3 or 4 chiropractors I have visited over the years have been nothing but quacks.Hi falutin clip joints. They try to get you to commit to repeated visits & con you into buying their homeopathic medicines at exhorbitant prices & they don't work anyway.

Itsme, how long have you taken Fosomax? It is supposed to stop Osteopenia from progressing. You schould never take it for more than 5 yrs. It also has side effects like heartburn, difficulty  swallowing and Chest pain. My Dr. prescribed that for me and after research, I did not take it.
I take calcium and Vitamin D3 instead. without the side effects.
Ihave used a chiropractor with good results after I had a car accident. My back is fine now.
You can try it and see how it works for you.
Have you ever heard of an Osteopath? The do manipulations of muscles and joints, while Chiropractors do manuipulation of the spinal chord.
