ANY Yahoo! Messenger program will not install properly if a former program, or an incomplete install, has not been completely deleted from the computer first. (Don't worry - your Contacts List will be saved into the fresh installation of an updated Messenger!) Use the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs method, then double-check by going to Start > Search > files and folders > Yahoo! Messenger (notice the exclamation mark in the title). Write down the file path and delete all references manually if necessary. Delete all Yahoo Messenger references from the registry. You can use the safe registry editor in the CCleaner program for this too. (CCleaner is great for deleting the cache, cookies and all 'junk files'). The uninstaller works well for Vista and Win 7, usually.

Download and SAVE the program directly from the File Hippo web site. Install it only AFTER completely cleaning the registry of remnants. Download the most recent version of any Yahoo Instant Messenger (highest number, top of its list) Since Messenger 11 is still in beta format, you might prefer the earlier versions listed on the right of the page. You must be operating as an Administrator to install the program.

Some firewalls have issues with installing Messenger from the Yahoo installer site, but disabling your firewall while online is VERY dangerous! Usually, by installing after downloading, the firewall will ask for permission to run the program.

If you use Internet Explorer 8 or 9 as your browser, Yahoo Messenger 10 or 11 will not work properly without updated Flash and Java programs also installed, and possibly the .NET framework update.

If you install from the Yahoo site without deleting your other program, you may get a 'missing .dll files' warning. See this Yahoo Knowledge Base article for that:
