Locate and clean the timing marks. Refer to the service manual for the exact location of the timing marks. This varies slightly from year to year and engine to engine.

Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches operating temperature. Normal operating temperature is usually near the center of the temperature gauge in the instrument cluster.

Turn off the engine and disconnect the timing connector. The timing connector on Chevy engines is a black connector with a tan and black wire that breaks out of the wiring harness near the passenger side of the firewall or under the passenger side carpet. Refer to the service manual for your specific vehicle for the exact location.

Loosen the distributor hold-down, which is located at the base of the distributor, and then start the engine. Read ignition timing by pointing the timing light at the timing marks and squeezing the trigger on the light. Adjust the timing as needed by rotating the distributor until the timing marks are within specifications.

Shut off the engine and tighten the distributor hold-down. Recheck the timing to be sure it didn't move while tightening the hold-down. Plug the timing connection back in and restart the engine. Test-drive the vehicle to verify that everything runs well.
