Driver Installation Issues
Using outdated or corrupt print drivers and software can cause your Windows 7 computer
to fail to recognize your HP C4480 printer. Download the Windows 7-compatible driver and software from the HP website. Uninstall previously installed drivers and software and reboot your computer before installing the new version. Disconnect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable running between the printer and computer from the back of the printer until prompted to reconnect during the software installation to avoid continued communication failures.
Power Problem
The obvious solutions include making sure the C4480 is turned on and ready to print, but other power-related issues exist. Problems such as loose cables and faulty wiring can cause the printer to power off erratically. This can result in your computer's inability to recognize the connected C4480 printer. Check the cable that connects the printer to the electrical outlet or suppression strip to confirm that both ends fit securely. Verify the functionality of the outlet or suppression strip by connecting the C4480 into another electrical source.
Connectivity Troubles
The Photosmart C4480 requires a USB connection with your computer. Without this connection, the computer cannot communicate with the printer and you cannot print. Confirm that the cable connects firmly into the back of the C4480 and into your computer's USB port. In addition, connecting the two before the prompt during the installation process can result in your computer's inability to recognize the printer. If necessary, disconnect the USB cable from the back of the printer, uninstall the software and reboot your computer. Then reconnect the USB cable when prompted during the C4480 software installation.
Hardware Failure
USB port failure can cause your computer to fail to recognize the connected printer. Verify port functionality by connecting the printer to a different port. Connecting a separate USB device into the port in question also verifies port functionality. If the computer fails to recognize any device connected to the port, your computer may require service
