Practice, practice, practice. It's all in the shadowing. If you master the shadowing, then you can draw portraits that look like black and white photos. Go yo an art store and pick up a book on shadowing with pencil. I use a regular #2 pencil.

My design teacher had a dream that one of us students would paint or pencil chrome. He didn’t have any takers ... you can do it, of course.
