The skin around the hips, elbows and hocks (ankle area) is often damaged in large dogs due to the pressure on them when they lay down. The result of this is often hair loss with thickening of the skin or callous formation. In some dogs, the calluses will progress to the point of infection or ulceration and require oral or topical antibiotics, but not usually. These sores may become worse as dogs age and sleep more or have a gain in weight that puts more pressure on these areas. Summertime can also contribute as cool cement walkways and driveways become more attractive resting spots. The hard, abrasive surface however can worsen some calluses. Encouraging your pet to rest or sleep on a soft surface will help.
