16 year old car is due to be replaced, Best to take it to a Lexus dealer,, they got the right equipment and skilled mechanics to fix it and/or analyze problems. Timing should be set by ECM(electronic engine management) what-cha-ma-call-it  thingy,,haha. The ECM should be under hood or dash. Timing should be set by this management box,,, don't mess with it! Or get a new Lexus,, you won't have any trouble until warrantee expires(whatever comes 1st.,,usually 100K miles but cars are complicated machines anymore. Go get a new Ford, Chrysler/Dodge or Gen Motors vehicle,,, keep American factory workers jobs in America please!!! .This NAFTA do-do is NOT good,,sending work to other countries because labor is cheaper.  I've never had a foriegn car,, cept a ''88 Porsche  which I loved dearly. had 3 Corvairs I restored, a '78 Bronco II I fixed up, got rid of it now looking for another 'toy' to tinker with. Drive an '01 chevy p/up I keep maintained, 170K+ miles on it,,short bed, cold a/c, 4.3 litre engine, auto tranny, etc. 23mpg on trips out to west coast or to Ind. where I'm from,, The Hoosier state.    I am retired from Gen.Motors SUV assembly plant in Arlington,Texas, USA,, I know from 28 yrs experience its hard work,,lots of stress, body aches, doing repitative work 8,10, hrs day. But we earn it,,the pay, benefits etc. Have 4 vertebrate in cervical spine fused with metal and screws due to work stress(workmens compensation), but retired now and don't have to clock in or put up with the B.S. anymore .I like to camp, fish, got a home that needs things fixed ever so often., still do a little car fixin,, inherited from my dear father, bless his soul and spirit in Heaven.. Served my time in USAF in VietNam,,got issues from that Agent Orange de-foliant they used to kill vegetation,, VA is denying my claims,, the do-do is goin to hit the fan soon but I know the VA is over-whelmed(Texas is a big state, 4 VA facilities in the DFW area alone)) now due to this 'war' in Afghanistsan,etc. It breaks my heart to see some of these troops in worse shape then I am, messed up in the head(PTSD, shell shock,etc), burns, missing arms/legs in wheel chairs, etc etc.,, We all deserve and demand the very best treatment for what we've expirienced,, war is hell, it'll make you grow up to be a good honest hard working person.    I go into the plant to visit my co-workers ever so often,, they are all good hard workers.  Good luck sir, hope this info I gave is of use to you. (off soap box now,,carry on).  God Bless America and Peace be with you and yours.
