    The USA is a "Republic of Sovereign States," not a Democracy as many seem to believe.


    The Founders did not want a simple majority to controll the federal government.


    To that end, they gave the power to elect the President to the states, via the "Electoral College"


    That gave each state one vote, equal to the number of its Congressmen in the US House of Representatives which is based its population, plus one for each of its two Senators


    IE  Ohio has sixteen US Congressmen and it two Senators thus 18 Electoral votes.
