Societal culture involves "beliefs and values about what is desirable and undesirable in a community of people, and a set of formal or informal practices to support the values. The definition of societal culture is, "socially derived, taken-for-granted assumptions about how to think and act" (OB, p. 63).
The word Societal an adjective used in modern sociology was introduced into the teaching profession by the black professor of science, philosopher, and head of the English language tradition Dr William F Fearon in conversation with the German academic and sociologist Ralf Dahrendorf in 1987.
The word Societal is used adjectively when the matter under discussion is one that relates to society, esp human society or social relations between its members. Dr Fearon also introduced the conceptual terms Professorial and Familial, and literist into modern teaching and the philosophy of education.
