Yes, one is for measuring a flat plane of measurement, as if you are going to lay carpet, for instance. The other (cubit yards) is for measuring how much space in a 3 dimensional plane, like how much space in your home to heat, for example. You calculate cubic space by multiplying the length (in yds. ) times the width (in yds.) times the height (in yds.) . Your answer will be in cubic yds. You may do this with any linear measurement, it need not only be in yards. Ex. Cubic inches of displacement of a car engine.
