For the same reason that you go to "get a haircut".  Do you have only one hair to cut or do you have several?  It's a strange language.           :)

b/c it has two legs on it,or two leg holes. Same with a pair of glasses. It has two lenses on it for both eyes.  And they call pants, a pair of pants.

Interesting question, so why is it not a pair of brassieres, of which the contents come in pairs?

Think of all the amputees out there missing a leg or arm, why do they have to pay for a 'pair' of shoes when they only have one foot? or a pair of pants when they have only one leg?  Not fair!! They should get their needs a half price! 

This gives me an idea, once i was going to open a rotten fruit stand, now i think next door i will open a store that sells shoes one at a time, you can buy one 'pant' left or right, one glove, your choice right or left.. The possibilities are endless! Shirts with one arm , bras with one cup , left hand and right hand monkey wrenches and hats that stay in place without the use of your ears..   I'm on it!!!
