The Mayan people were all but wiped out by religious persecution. The invading Spaniards who followed the Christian ways and had a problem with the Mayan beliefs as they did not believe in the Christian God. Those who survived went into seclusion to practice in secret. We do not know for a fact that the calendar ended. It may still exist but only in secret in order to protect it. The hoopla over the last known calendar was a marketing ploy to get people to buy the books about the ending of the world which is NOT going to happen.
