I happen to have an Alien side kick.  He has looked at the this little planet of ours many many times. 

Here is what he has seen ...

He say's after the 50 or 60th time ... It all kind of mishes together... They kind of say this, "Plfjeiafeij iijfiejaf jifieajof ajfofa !"  Which translates into , "Mango-Ya Ya... park over there!"

Because the planet is an object in space so it does have a top and bottom. As for North, South, East and West, we use these points for directional purposes to find our way around this planet. The aliens have a much more sophisticated way of find their way around in space. I'll let Carl, our resident alien explain that to you. 

Captian Kirk never says North,east south or west, he always says " Sulu, warp 7---that-a way"

good question. They answer is- - - - b/c we are chauvanisitic.....which means we earthlings think  the way we do things is the right way and the only way. Never mind if people on another planet think our planet is lying on it's side.
