The city animal pound. Call the police (probably animal control dept) and ask where they took your dog to.

What were the circumstances of the dog being picked up?  Was there a dog bite to a human?  If so, and there was no proof of a rabies vaccination, the dog may have been taken for quarantine.  This is the good news, if you are lucky.  If they could not locate owner, they may have tested the dog for rabies.  This test, unfortunately, requires brain tissue.  To do so the dog is euthanized for the testing.  This is done to see if the person has to go on rabies treatment.  This is why it is mandated by law to have your pets current with vaccinations including rabies.
