The 6.0L DIT have had their share of reliability issues, but when they are working right, are very gratifying to drive. The 2003 model years had issues with ICP sensors leaking oil. 2004 to 2007 model years have had EGR coolers failing continuously. 2005 to 2007 model years have had STC fittings blow apart resulting in no-start when hot symptoms, the most drastic of which, resulted in branch tube replacements. 2003 to 2007 model years have had repeat issues of EGR valve carboning up and being stuck open, resulting in black smoke and lack of power concerns. With all that said, the 7.3L DIT was a much simpler, easier to repair engine compared to the 6.0L. Doesn't necessarily mean they are bad per se. Ford is stepping up to the plate by extending the warranty on these and the 2008 6.4L engines. About the only thing on a 7.3L that will leave you stranded on the side of the road are the CMP sensors, which have gone down in price from a couple hundred dollars, to about forty dollars. This part is only one 10mm bolt away from being changed on the side of the road if necessary. Hopefully, with all that said, this will help you make an informed decision.
