Older religions believed in a multiplicity of gods, for example the Greeks and Romans. Monotheism probably started with the Zoroastrians. Christians say they are monotheistic but they worship the father, Son, and Holy Ghost and attempt to unify these into one god. Muslims are truly monotheistic as they only worship one god.

No, Muslims do not worship Mohammed, only God. Mohammed was the mouthpiece by which God gave his word which was then recorded by Moh's wife as he was illiterate. Muslims get very steamed up at what they consider an insult to their prophet, but that is another issue.
There is only one Creator but many lower gods. The creator only needs you to know IT and love IT. You do not have to worship IT. Only lower gods require worship and religious practices that give rules to follow for proper adoration of this god and how to follow it's rules. The Creator has no rules and requires no religion for IT resides within you, not in a building.
