My dog used to be the mascot of the school that I taught at.  In fact, the commercial for "tagg" which airs often here, He looked like the red border collie on it, except my guy only had one eye circled in red, not both, like the one of that commercial.  I get startled when it pops up, as my guy has been gone since '07...

Mascots are often used as goodwill or marketing tools by sporting teams, companies and in the community, they are often inanimate objects or cartoon characters
