    What number is next in this sequence?

    4     27     16     125     36    ?

    What number would follow 36, and WHY?
    This was a question on a test I recently took. I have MY answer and reasoning.  I think I am looking for validation! :D

    FLIP is correct: 2 x 2 =4; 3 x 3 x 3 = 27, 4 x 4 = 16; 5 x 5 x 5 = 125; 6 x 6 = 36; and logically, the next step is 7 x 7 x 7, which = 343. Following the pattern, 64 would be the next number ( 8 x 8 )
    THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ANSWERS.

    I have a high IQ and an Engineering Degree and I never seem to have a clue when it come to those types of questions.

    Jack, I know how you feel.

    Something to do with 7 being multiplied by something?

    2x2=4

    3x3x3=27

    2x2x2x2=16

    5x5x5=125

    6x6=36

    7x....dunno what comes next.

    look for the pattern. you are on the right track. Simplify one of those that you already have and you will have the answer immediately.

    Bob...d'ya know the effort this cost me???? ha ha ha...I'm wicked bad at math...boo hoo hoo ;)

    Um...49...it makes a nice little hill. :)
    Bob/PKB

    Last clue: Look at the patterns you have and see which one needs to be simpler.
    Gotta get ready for LV. :D

    Pack the bikini, miss! ;)
    Flip

    4x4=16 (not 2x2x2x2)
    7x7x7=343
    BTW: I would not have figured it out without the help of Dardaigh's answer.

    Thanks Flip...figures I got something wrong but I was honestly gonna do 7x7x7...but didn't have a calculator, then got side-tracked looking for one on-line, with something else. Teamwork...thanks! :)

    Yes, DD and Flip. I stretched out the logic in the comment section above.

    Thanks, Bob...I still hate math and now I have to carry Flip's books for a week! LOL :)

    Flip needs to buy you some ice cream.

    Yum, sounds good. :D

    I always loved math, anything with numbers. In high school I took every kind of math that was available. When it comes to numbers, I have a photographic memory. Maybe that's why I have Face Blindness.... the numbers are taking up all the brain space. Thanks for carrying the books Dardaigh.
    Dardaigh

    I used to have a photographic memory for words.
    I saw a program earlier this evening about Face Blindness, Flip. I can't imagine what you must go through. It's my pleasure to carry the books, cos you came to my rescue when I was messin' up! :D
