Are oranges called oranges because they are orange in color, or is the color called orange because oranges are orange in color?

Oranges were originally green, so the name has nothing to do with colour.

Interesting facts Linda. Thanks. (We know PBhoye) He likes to ask what he thinks are fun questions. I don't really think he looks for a real answer all the time ;)

Next time answer in the new answer box so we can give you thumbs up for the correct answer.

The fruit came before the colour. The word “orange” derives from the Arabic naranj and arrived in English as “narange” in the 14th century, gradually losing the initial “n”. This process is called wrong word division and also left us with apron (from naperon) and umpire (from noumpere). Orange was first used as the name for a colour in 1542.

The color is named after the orange.

LOL...Ya never know, I have known a few lesbians and gay friends to have or adopt. One was going to name her kid Turkey (after the baster used to inject the swimmers)...She didn't stay pregnant (which was sad- but knowing her the kids nickname would have been baster)

I've done my child raising. I'm good. :)

Perhaps it is just a fortunate coincidence the fruit is named after its color (or vice versa).  Your question is similar to "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?".
