To me and Many...a bbq is more of a social fun event..outdoors,hot summers day!....watching my toast or whatever cook under the grill is not nearly so much fun..and I wouldn`t invite my friends over to watch!!....bbq food has a lovely natural smoky flavour and to me it`s one big get together and fun!!:-)

The words 'Barbecue' and 'Grill' suffered the same fate as all other long-winded terminologies. As we become more advanced in the sciences of every day living, we tend to not only use 'Contractions' of terminologies and word/s [i.e. to shorten them] but to also modify the meanings of such terms to suit the times. For example, in ancient times the typical method of roasting a beast was to 'Skewer' the latter from one end to the other with a 'Barbed Cue Stick', which was made from either hardwood, or steel to facilitate rotation of the beast over the open fire. The 'Barbs' on the 'Cue Stick' would be at either end and pressed against the flesh to prevent same from just slipping around inside the animal, leaving it cook on one side only. The barbs therefore enabled the beast to be rotated evenly. As a result, of 'Contractions' 'Barbed Cue Stick' became Barbecue. We shorten it simply for the sake of convenience. These days we tend to name such cooking methods as being a 'Spit-Roasts', But never-the-less today we still use the contracted term of 'Barbecue' in lieu of cooking on a steel plate. As for the term 'Grill'; It means what it says. It is to cook over an open grill, i.e. slats of steel over an open flame. In the meantime, don't be surprised if both terms eventually evolve. Because the term 'Cue-Stick' has been relegated to descibing a 'Snooker Stick' , and 'Barbs' to describe 'Barbed-Wire' perhaps the terms 'Barbeque, Grill, Plate & Skewer' should 'evolve' to become one word which describes them all.
