Means you have cancelled it they can not be your friend ..
They could also be trying to add you and your ignoring it so they send another..

If the cancel friend request went through, they should not have had opportunity to unfriend me right, or does it just show unfriend because it was cancelled?
They can not make you a friend if you cancelled the request..
Cancel = means you do not want their friendship ..
Cancel = means you do not want their friendship ..
