I phone text messaging

Every time I attempt to send a an sms it goes as an mms, there is a silhouette of a camera near the new text message,I have tried everything I can think of but no luck any ideas ??

I have an iPhone. I just go to messages. Punch in the number.... text and send.

I keep trying, but it still comes up with this little weeny camera image near where you type,some messages go O.K, but most go as picture messages, and some I'm only replying to

Ok... I have my big fat iPhone book out ($25.99 Canadian because that is how sad I am!!)
The camera is on the left and the SEND is on the right.
Type your message. Tap SEND. Your message is sent.
Is this what you are doing?

oh woe is me,I've just tried it again (trust me,only to a good friend at this hour)on a cold windy and rainy day,but the little image is on the left and I press send on the right,it seems to only happen to couple of people..who I might add expect pictures!! I'm not up to that yet
