I closed my business down in December 2011 partly because we were struggling for the past few years, and partly because I was 65. My telephone line at the office which I rented was with a company called Unicom, this is in the UK. I phoned and wrote to them three months in advance to tell them that we were closing and that the line would need to be disconnected, and was told on the phone that it was fine. When they eventually disconnected after more letters and phone calls they sent me a bill for £1700. I had already paid them for all the calls and line rental to date, and had cancelled the direct debit. The £1700 was for switching the line off, now I am having letters from them threatening to take me to court to recover this money, which I don't owe them. We were with them for 8 years and there was no mention of payment for disconnecting when we went with them. What do you think?

I think I would ask them to itemize the bill for those charges, and go along with them taking me to court. If I didn't specifically agree to pay such an exhorbitant amount of money to disconnect...I would fairly much say it seemed to be a case of fraud.
The only way I could even begin to comprehend those kinds of costs, would be if they had to install poles to hang their line from, or had to trench a long distance to install an underground line, and you had agreed to keep the line for so long as a trade-off to absorb costs.

For that much money I would feel better letting a judge know of the rip off they are trying pull on you.
