What were the circumstances that caused the ouster of the British from Gwalior in circa 1880

I understand that ALL the British, including the military, were given just 48 hours to vacate the city of Gwalior there by causing a lot of suffering and the abondoning of goods since most of the transport had been taken by the military leaving a scant amount of transport for the civilian population, my GF his mother and 5 of his siblings being one of the lucky ones who secured one cart (bribed?) and escaped to Jhansi in UP, India.
