    If A is a subset of B, then that tells you that every element that is in A is also in B, however it doesn't tell you that every element in B is also in A. If the latter statement holds, i.e. every element in B is also in A, then A = B.

    For example:

    A = {1,2,3,4}
    B = {1,2,3,4,5}

    In this case, A is a subset of B, but B is not a subset of A.

    A = {1,2,3,4,5}
    B = {1,2,3,4,5}

    In this case A is a subset of B and B is a subset of A, hence A = B
