       a tit in a trance (‘trance’ = a dream-like condition) [said of someone who seems dreamy, with the mind elsewhere]
      A tit is a bird, not just slang for boob, slang for breast

          Intelligence, more or less, doesn't come into it. I wonder who first coined the expression, whether it is regional-speak and just how it has achieved universal usage.

          Have never heard the expression in the U.K and would never dream of using it. it would (by most people) be considered not only sexist but extremely offensive.
