I received a message on my computer saying that my virtual memory is low and that my virtual memory was being increased.
I don't understand what that means.....I understand the part about it being increased.
But, why does it need to be increased and what do I need to do differently to work within the memory that I have?.......and is it even important for me to do so?

Virtual memory is actually a file on the hard drive where data not currently in use by the OS or an application is kept for quick retrieval. The purpose of this file is to make more physical memory available to the system. When Windows is allowed to automatically control the size of this file it will "increase memory" when it needs it.
Runniing out of memory is generally a result of too many programs and processes running at once. To see what is running, right click on the start bar and select task manager. The processes tab shows how many are running and various details. The performance tab offers both graphs and tables of data. Use the help files to learn about what these mean.
The more free memory your system has the better it performs so limiting the number of start up programs to only those you need or want is the first place to start.
