This is a picture of the memorial in my backyard in honor of my grandfather, who fought in WWII. He landed in Normandy on D Day. He fought in Ardennes (battle of the bulge), Central Europe, Northern France, Rhineland, and the Northern African campaign. He was in some of the bloodiest battles of WWll. Among his medals is the bronze star with the V for valor, honoring his act of heroism when he ran into enemy fire to retrieve a wounded comrade, throwing him over his should and running them both back to safety. He was an army combat engineer. He was the first one in prior to the start of a battle clearing debris and creating roads or demolishing buildings that might be in the way of the incoming troops. They worked as a small unit with little protection, each man with a rifle at hand having to do their job and protect themselves or each other from snipers or enemy troops that might come apon them. The one thing he would never talk about was the men he killed. He was always proud of his service to his country even though he spent every day of the war scared he would not make it back. He is/was my hero. There was never a better man in my life than my grandfather. I miss him very much. I honor him always.
