Twelve inches = one foot
Imagine a square that is 12 inches long and 12 inches high. There would be 12 rows (and 12 columns) of 1 inch squares. This 12 x 12 box would be the same as 1 square foot. It would have 144 square inches in it. (12 x 12 = 144) SOOOO 144 square inches is equal to 1 square foot.
