        No, I don't think so, without using google, I find I am shy around some people or people that create a circumstance I am not comfortable with, avoidance is what I do with people that annoy,or  irritate me, or those I find I have nothing in common with

            YES, in certain circumstances, "SHY" and "AVOID" are synonymous. Note that "shy" doesn't stand alone in the sentence.
            "Bob tends to shy away from confrontation with his boss."
            "Bob tends to avoid confrontation with his boss."
