Amongst Americans, on Memorial Day, is it considered inappropriate to question the validity of specific military engagements in foreign conflicts or is this Day limited to remembering the fallen victims ?

Good question. Can somebody comment on this?
It is limited to remembering the fallen for any war at any point in this nations history. We remember that they gave their lives for us. We honor the sacrifice. This is what the day is for.
On this day we should be remembering the fallen victims only.
The validity of every American military internal or foreign engagement/conflict/war is debated and questioned in every other day of the year.
