In a play, there is a lot more monologue and dialogue than in a story.  The descriptions of actions are acted out.  Thought in the story are voiced aloud in a play.  The play starts with Act 1 Scene 1.  A description of the set is thoroughly given.  The characters are introduced a bit as well.  When the play starts, there is immediate action and/or speaking.
The author assigns the words to each character; in parenthesis are actions to accompany the words.  Here's an example:

Bob: (walks across the room, separates curtains, peers out window) What time is Becky expected, Florence?
Florence: (rising from the couch, walks to Bob and puts her hand on his arm) Why are you so nervous about seeing her again? She won't remember what happened all those years ago.
Bob:(pulls away from Florence, darkens) I remember, Florence.  I remember.
Florence: (laughs lightly, turns and walks toward exit,  dignified and proud. She turns at the door to speak) .....and you don't let anyone else forget, do you, Bob? (exit quietly closing door).
