      There is a program called "Notation Composer" that uses .not files.  It is a music writing program that can play the music over MIDI interface or write out .mid files.  It can also print out the music in standard music notation.  It might be able to put out a .jpg file of the music - like sheet music.  This program uses the .not file to store music notation information.  I don't know about other uses for the .not suffix.
