.XLR is a MS works spreadsheet extension, you obviously do not have Microsoft Works.

This xlr file must have been created before MS works 8.0 or else your MS Excel would open it.

The XLR file type is primarily associated with 'Works' by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft Works 9 gives you basic home productivity tools. Even though it's not listed, the 2.4 version of the OpenOffice.org spreadsheet component appears to be able to open these files.

Probably the problem is that these files are corrupted and need to be recovered due to xlsx repair tool
