It struck a huge Iceberg, that sliced through the starboard side and flooded several of the watertight compartments that resulted in overwhelming the bilge pumps.
Modern ships are doubled hulled and all of the compartments within the hull are watertight, in an effort to avoid similar incidents.

to finish Jack's answer- the iceberg that the Titanic hit tore through the bottom area of the ship, This flooded several compartments- and eventually a good part of the ship- because the watertight compartment doors were not closed. This caused the engines to shut down and the power to fail. Eventually the ship tipped -when enough of the bow section was in the icy water the pressure ripped the ship intwo- sending the bow fist, then the stern plunging to the ocean floor.
They never expected a tragedy to happen- they did not have enough room in the life boats..chaos took over. Many people died of hypothermia or drown in the freezing waters (you cannot live long in water that cold! it was a painful few minutes before you go numb and eventually lose consciousness- ironically those wearing life vests probably suffered more that those that actually drown!) But those in the life boats had to live with that Horrible night for the rest of their lives !!!
