If your car was part in the lawn with boot and door open perhaps they thought car was stolen or an accident had happened!

I do not know where you live- and this could be important in determining wether a police search is allowed.  

In Canada they must usually show probable cause...or that there is a valid reason to search...for example there's a leg hanging out the back or a Zebra or some other illegal sort of thing.One would think that they'd at least have offered an explanation of their behaviour...if it were common folk one could assume they were bonkers just sliding up and shaking down your car like that!!Did they say anything? Did you protest?Were you doing something suspicious looking?

They probably thought you were stealing the sound system.Seems they can do whatever they want, did you ask have they got a warrant to search your car ?

Boot? We call it trunk...Anyhow, the car appeared suspicious and cops have the right to investigate. Had a cop knock on my door because my house appeared broken into....They were just doing their job and quite possibly, doing someone a favor in another instance.....
