Show me a Sony washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, microwave oven, vacuum cleaner, fridge, freezer, electric toothbrush and shaver to name just a few of the many Philips consumer products available. In the consumer electronics field Philips play a major research, development, production and marketing role. At the end of the day it is what do you want and how much can you fork out for it. 

My next door neighbor retired as a manager at our local Phillips plant. His comment to me was, he didn't think they will ever learn how to develop a decent tv screen.

They are both reliable...but according to consumer reports-Sony is the best, but also more expensive.

I will only buy an "LG" product. Great performance and reliability. Cost a few bucks more but well worth it.

It depends on the product.  Sony, a Japanese company, makes better TVs and electronics.  Phillips, a Dutch company, makes good appliances and has for decades.
