In the music biz we use the term all the time.  Jam: when a group of musicians get together and improvise their music with unrecoverable results!  LOL A musical 'free for all'  Total fun with no boundries..

In  a Jam, means in trouble, that could be hard to get out off.

Being "in a jam" is being in an uncomfortable situation, or one that you are having trouble getting resolved.  Consequences can be serious!
"Can you help me, Mom?  I'm in a jam.  I need to pay the bookie $100 and I only have $62. Can you help me out with a loan?"
