Know how large your fuel tank is (how many gallons it holds). Fill it to the top. Note the mileage showing on the odometer after filling the tank. Drive until needle is on empty (do not run out of gas however). When the tank is near empty, note the mileage on the odometer again. Subtract the old from the new and get the total. Divide that into the gallons of fuel your tank holds. This gives you your approx miles per gallon.
