    8 1/5- 5 1/4=

You have some work to do. With addition and subtraction of fractions, the denominator must be the same number. You do not add nor subtract the denominator.

    The common denominator for 8 1/5 and 5 1/4 is 20.

    8 1/5 x 4/4 = 8 4/20

    5 1/4 x 5/5 = 5 5/20

    Now, subtract with the new fractions:  8 4/20 - 5 5/20

More work! You cannot minus 5 from 4. You'll have to borrow. Fix the 8 4/20

    8 4/20 = 7 20/20 + 4/20 = 7 24/20

    Now, you can subtract.

    7 24/20 - 5 5/20 = 2 19/20 > which cannot be reduce,

    Answer:  2 19/20
