I live in Canada and I have a star on the side of my house.  It looks good.  I have an Arts and Crafts style home. 

Maybe it's a style thing.  Here it is... like windchimes and bells.... birdhouses, weather vanes.

I lived in a small town a while ago and a lot of people had stars...some were wooden and others looked to be made out of metal.  I was told that the wooden ones were hung years ago and showed kids in the area where to go if they were being followed, or had been approached by, a stranger.  That ended when the metal ones went up on other people's homes (they did not know the meaning of the wooden stars...only parents with kids knew about them).  It does seem to be a popular decoration for homes now & my guess is that that is all it is at this point-since the stars are easily purchased.
