A fine mixture of gasoline and air to make a mist that is then sucked into the intake manifold and through the intake valves to the cylinders for combustion.

The Carburetor is like a mixing machine, there are valves and ports and 'butterflys' that will open as accelerator is depressed bringing in more air and thusly sucking more fuel through the 'needle valves opening'  Once this air and gasoline come together it forms a mist. Carburetors are really not that complex, it just uses basic laws of physics to work.  Today's modern engines have all but done away with this antiquated fuel delivery system, today cars are equipped with fuel injections-- Something that ww2 brought us as conventional carb engines would not perform well in combat aircraft engines. .
