There is usually a guide for the thread path on the machine itself. Thread comes from the spool, to the spindle, down the shaft to the needle, wrapping around the "turnstile" type thing, then through the needle (go towards the machine) and out the back. There is also a "catch" about halfway tot eh needle. I have to "open" my door to put the thread through that, but that's just me. Something like that.
