the book starts with an attorney going to a dinner party and meeting a woman that he brings home and they make love. he goes to the store and comes home to find her murdered. then a neighbor vacuuming nude gets killed as he watches through the window. then ppl all around him are getting killed and he thinks it may be someone he helped put in jail years ago. he gets involved with the relative of a mafia boss. it goes on till they catch the killer.

Sounds like any murder story to me. Sharon stone acts in a movie like that with Michael Douglas, Basic Instinct 1 and basic instinct 2 was a total flop including the love scenes. I'd go with @romos and I have all the Grisham books here in my library. :). Good reading, better than guessing on movies.
