    Children learn what they live

This comment has been included in a couple of my answers, and is something I adamantly believe.

They learned how to respect people and society from their parents

Enough said, they are fine adults.

    Job done!

My two eldest don't have one sense of humor between the two of them... they learned that from their dad.

    Why did you marry him?
    Bob/PKB

I'm so sorry for them, as I am sure you are as well. No sense of humor is practically a disability. We HAVE to LAUGH!

@Digger... He was very good looking and charming. The entire experience is now funny in retrospect. We were truly ill suited. Sad and true but the girls are very nice looking!

Bob, one thing I learned, and it is, not to have children.

Although I don't expect you to elaborate, I would appreciate any more insight you feel comfortable sharing, Dollybird. That was a hard lesson to live as a child.

Bob, not sure what you would like me to state, further ?

I cannot brag about my children learning from my example, cause I'd always believe working in this world if you want too get anywhere. Now kid expect everything is free handout, Don't know who to blame for this kind of behavior? Is this what they teach them in schools? I know when I grew up it was a different world and you didn't get away with kind of behavior!

    Bob/PKB

But you DID give them the example of working to support yourself and your family. They know this, facebook; choosing to live likewise is their choice....learned from other aspects of living. It's not anything you did or didn't do.

Bob ! I understand what your saying, only trouble is that I feel so empty now that my son is cripple well I think you know the story about drug abuse, need I say anymore? at lease my daughter is doing find, but her too got off on the wrong foot, until she met someone too straight her up.

While I had the chance, I taught my son to be honest and be friendly, nice as it were......

    Bob/PKB

Thank you for your direct answer, Julie. I hope he kept those attributes as he grew into manhood.

Not a darn thing.. sorry i was never blessed with children, but if i did i would hope they would be like my father..

    Bob/PKB

What did you live that you learned from him?
    daren1

respect others and treat others in the way you would want to be treated..

I believe it is difficult today to teach children anything as a parents competition is in their peers, their games they play, the media and less than diverse teachers in schools. They are constantly being bombarded by social netwoks and accptance by friends. Children today are compelled to aclimate to the popular beliefs that make them cool. Parents today have little or no chance to pass on their teachings.

It had always been standard teen protocol to clash with their parents desires and upbringing, this was considered normal - Today, this is not so true, where children may still go against their parents teachings, many do not recover from this 'adolecent' life due to constantly being bombarded with this defunct social input.  As parents today, it is very difficult to overcome this.  Unless of course you are a parent theat either doesn't care or that you believe in the peer pressure overloads these kids expierence today.  Social skills today is wireless communication, not long ago right here on akaQA a question from a young person on what to say to a girl in a text message to get her to like him..  maybe I am getting too old but I do believe we are losing control of our children that we once had.

No doubt the challenges are increasing, Vinny, but I still think parents have a window of opportunity to directly teach; following that, they must teach by example. Those "lessons" may not be mimicked early in adulthood, but those values and morals are there. My kids got a mixed bag, are grasping now, but they DO emulate some of the good stuff they got at home, too; I know they all want the family life I wanted for them. It's some consolation.

Robert Fulghum thought that he learned all things that he needed to know in the kindergarden. Without disagreeing I’d say that I learned them from my mom and dad and our children from us following the examples. Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.

A great excerpt from a great book! Thank you, valR. If we can give our kids THAT much to take with them, we have done OK!

Responsibility, hard work, a sense of humor and accountability have always been at the top of the list of things I have mentored to both my own children, and the countless who I have had as students in 35 yrs of teaching high school.

    Bob/PKB

You have had the opportunity to be a major influence in many lives. Sounds like you took that VERY seriously.
    Thank you.

Mine learn to treat other people with respect and kindness...to work hard at their studies and that homework is to be done as early as possible at the week end!..And that there`s NO WAY their Mum will EVER do their homework on the school run on a MONDAY Morning!!..(Me..I learnt that one the hard way)!!!LOL!!....TOUGH LOVE!!!:->

    Bob/PKB

Doesn't sound "tough" to me. Sounds like "the way things outra be! Thanks for your answer, millie 111

Well thanks for that Bob/PKB, I tried my best...

    Bob/PKB

That's what counts. Even the ones who didn't seem to respond during high school will not forget you and your influence will show as they mature and choose better paths.
